Scripture of the Day

Oak's Corner

I am thinking about Thanksgiving. Marsha and I will be traveling to Georgia to enjoy family and festivities. Marsha’s sister and brothers and families live close to our grandchildren and their families. The Thanksgiving holiday has always been a family centered occasion that includes a hike in the woods and the gathering of leaves. Of course, eating too much turkey and all the enhanced side items that go along with the traditional meal always precedes the hike. Together with family, telling tales over a feast, giving thanks for what we have and making memories for tomorrow fills our spirits with comfort and joy.

This should be the routine everyday. This should be the norm for life together in the church family: Giving thanks for God’s generosity toward us. Paul writes: “Now he who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will also supply and increase your store of seed and will enlarge the harvest of your righteousness. You will be made rich in every way so that you can be generous on every occasion, and through us your generosity will result in thanksgiving to God.” (2 Corinthians 9:10-11 NIV)  Imagine your generosity resulting in thanksgiving to God.

I thank you for your generosity expressed in person, in notes, in gift certificates, and in gift cards during Pastor appreciation month. I thank you for your response to “Oak’s Challenge” that contributed $25,390.00 to our “past due” accounts. I thank you for your participation in our financial pledge campaign for 2009, as we desire to be good stewards. I thank you for the generosity of your giving: in spirit, attitude, time, kindness, thoughtfulness, talent, comments and commitments.

Following Thanksgiving comes Christmas. I am thankful for God’s gift of Jesus. Keeping Christ in Christmas, let’s celebrate generously.
